HUNGARY's COMING ELECTIONS ON APRIL 12, 2026
HUNGARY:
The run-up to the parliamentary elections on April 12, 2026
The coming Hungarian elections are very important
not only for Hungary, but for Europe. The opposition run by the former Orbán
ally, Peter Magyar ( now also a member of the European Parliament, EPP group
) is for the time being leading in an
average of opinion polls. He and his
allies are 14 % ahead of Orbán. The lead
has been confirmed during a longer period.
If he succeds he will have many more seats in the Hungarian parliament
of 199 seats that Orbán’s parties.
But many – also non-Hungarian forces – try by
different methods to help Orbán ☹
1. Russian interference:
The leader of the opposition, Peter Magyar, has announced publicly that he believes that Russia
via a group placed in the Russian embassy in Budapest is spreading false and
dangerous information on the social media.
The Russians, of course, deny it !
Magyar has suggested that the National Security
Council urgently discusses the issue.
2. American pressure:
We know about foreign minister Marco Rubio's
visit to Hungary on February 15-16 - to publicly express firm support to
Orbán from US in the coming elections.
And now a conference by the American led
organisation CPAC will take place in Hungary on Saturday, March 21. CPAC
means: Conservative Political Action Conference. It has
four times earlier met also in Hungary - and among its speakers
were Trump, Vance, Elon Musk, Nigel Farage, Karoline Leavitt, Steve Bannon,
etc.
They also organised a conference in Poland in
2025 to support the conservative candidate for the presidency ( which he then
won ). At that conference the US secretary for homeland affairs, Kristi
Noem spoke ( she has now been fired by Trump ).
You can see more about the conference on March 21
on this website: https://www.cpachungary.com/en/
3. The actual dispute about Russian oil to
Hungary via the old Druzhba pipeline, which goes through Ukraine:
Ukraine says the pipeline was bombed by a Russian drone and therefore
does not function for the moment. Hungary says it is blocked for political
reasons. EU has offered to pay for the repair - or that Hungary gets its
Russian oil via the Adria pipeline, which goes via Croatia. This seems to have been refused by the Hungarians.
A Hungarian delegation is right now in Ukraine to
try to visit the place, where the pipeline was bombed to see, what can be done. Ukraine says that this visit is purely
private – and that the people are there on a tourist visum.
More news on this point will appear shortly.
4. Hungary is blocking the 90 billion EU loan to
Ukraine - though Hungary and Slovakia do not participate in
it. And both countries accepted this loan at a recent EU
summit. Ukraine needs the money by the end of this month. To help Ukraine
the Nordic and the Baltic countries have promised to step in with money,
so that Ukraine has enough money for the first 6 months of this year. Strong diplomatic efforts are being made to
solve this issue. The Commission
president has stated, that one way or another the promised money will come to
Ukraine.
5. Peter Magyar continues to run his campaign on
these key points:
* curb of corruption
* unlock the 18-22 billion € blocked by EU for
the time being due to Hungary's breach of EU principles
* firmly make Hungary an active and positive
participant on the EU and in NATO.
6. According the the actual opinions polls -
collected by 35 independent institutes - Magyar' TIZLA is 14 % ahead of
Orbán's FIDESZ. It will give Magyar 115 seats and Orbán 78 seats in the
parliament of 199 seats.
