CANADA - AND THE DRAMATIC INITIATIVES FROM THE US
Canada’s flag in action
Canada has
been at least as surprised and concerned as Europe by President Trump's erratic
behavior, in which he variously attacks his best allies and appears to agree
with America's worst enemies so far.
First, Trump
demanded that Canada should become a state in the United States - and thus be
state no. 51. To this the Prime Minister of Canada immediately replied: This
has no better chance than a snowball's chance in hell!
Next, Trump
threatened 25% tariffs on imports from Canada.
This has now been put on hold for 30 days while the parties negotiate
the matter.
While all this
is happening, a stronger and stronger popular and political movement has
emerged in Canada, boycotting American goods, canceling planned vacations and
visits to the United States - and which also means that Canadians are buying
Canadian flags more than ever before to show their support.
Politically,
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has been in great difficulty for several months.
He has been the leader of the Liberal Party since 2013. A few weeks ago he
announced that he will step down as chairman and prime minister as soon as his
party has chosen a new leader. It seems
to be Mark Carney, who has been head of both Canada's and Great Britain's
national banks.
And since the
mood has clearly turned since Trump took office, it may well be that Carney can
win the next election, which must take place on October 20 this year at the
latest. Here, all 343 parliamentarians in the country are up for election.
Since the Canadian Conservatives are pretty much in line with Trump for a long
way, they are currently losing a lot of support. Therefore, the election will
be exciting and interesting.
At the same
time, Canada is currently chairing the G7 cooperation between the seven largest
democratic countries in the world. There
is a G7 summit in Alberta, Canada, from the 15th to the 17th. June.
